RESUMEN

Magnetic nanoparticles were functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) and activated with epoxy. This support was used to immobilize Lipase (Eversa® Transform 2.0) (EVS), optimization using the Taguchi method. XRF, SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and VSM performed the characterizations. The optimal conditions were immobilization yield (I.Y.) of 95.04 ± 0.79 %, time of 15 h, ionic load of 95 mM, protein load of 5 mg/g, and temperature of 25 °C. The maximum loading capacity was 25 mg/g, and its stability in 60 days of storage showed a negligible loss of only 9.53 % of its activity. The biocatalyst demonstrated better stability at varying temperatures than free EVS, maintaining 28 % of its activity at 70 °C. It was feasible to esterify free fatty acids (FFA) from babassu oil with the best reaction of 97.91 % and ten cycles having an efficiency above 50 %. The esterification of produced biolubricant was confirmed by NMR, and it displayed kinematic viscosity and density of 6.052 mm2/s and 0.832 g/cm3, respectively, at 40 °C. The in-silico study showed a binding affinity of -5.8 kcal/mol between EVS and oleic acid, suggesting a stable substrate-lipase combination suitable for esterification.

RESUMEN

Biosensors with nanomaterials and enzymes detect and quantify specific targets in samples, converting recognition into measurable signals. The study explores the intrinsic synergy between these elements for detecting and quantifying particular targets in biological and environmental samples, with results demonstrated through bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive review of enzyme-based biosensors. Using WoS, 57,331 articles were analyzed and refined to 880. Key journals, countries, institutions, and relevant authors were identified. The main areas highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of the field, and critical keywords identified five thematic clusters, revealing the primary nanoparticles used (CNTs, graphene, AuNPs), major application fields, basic application themes, and niche topics such as sensitive detection, peroxidase activity, and quantum dot utilization. The biosensor overview covered nanomaterials and their primary applications, addressing recent advances and inherent challenges. Patent analysis emphasized the U.S. leadership in the industrial sector, contrasting with China's academic prominence. Future studies should focus on enhancing biosensor portability and analysis speed, with challenges encompassing efficient integration with recent technologies and improving stability and reproducibility in the nanomaterial-enzyme interaction.

The leaching of herbicides into the soil is essential to control germinating seeds and parts of vegetative weeds. However, herbicide transportation to deeper soil layers can result in groundwater contamination and, consequently, environmental issues. In this research, our objective was to investigate differences in herbicide leaching between commercial formulations and analytical standards using three different soils. Leaching experiments were carried out for diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and in binary and ternary mixtures. The herbicide residue quantification was performed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Diuron had less mobility in soils and was retained in the most superficial layers. Hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl were more mobile and leached into deeper layers. The leaching process was more intense for hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl. The additives present in the commercial formulation favored the leaching in soils of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and mixture compared to the analytical standard. This fact highlights the importance of considering these effects for the positioning of herbicides in the field to increase the efficiency of weed control and minimize the potential for environmental contamination.

Wastewater treatment companies are facing several challenges related to the optimization of energy efficiency, meeting more restricted water quality standards, and resource recovery potential. Over the past decades, computational models have gained recognition as effective tools for addressing some of these challenges, contributing to the economic and operational efficiencies of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To predict the performance of WWTPs, numerous deterministic, stochastic, and time series-based models have been developed. Mechanistic models, incorporating physical and empirical knowledge, are dominant as predictive models. However, these models represent a simplification of reality, resulting in model structure uncertainty and a constant need for calibration. With the increasing amount of available data, data-driven models are becoming more attractive. The implementation of predictive models can revolutionize the way companies manage WWTPs by permitting the development of digital twins for process simulation in (near) real-time. In data-driven models, the structure is not explicitly specified but is instead determined by searching for relationships in the available data. Thus, the main objective of the present review is to discuss the implementation of machine learning models for the prediction of WWTP effluent characteristics and wastewater inflows as well as anomaly detection studies and energy consumption optimization in WWTPs. Furthermore, an overview considering the merging of both mechanistic and machine learning models resulting in hybrid models is presented as a promising approach. A critical assessment of the main gaps and future directions on the implementation of mathematical modeling in wastewater treatment processes is also presented, focusing on topics such as the explainability of data-driven models and the use of Transfer Learning processes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can trigger transient anti-tumor cytotoxicity through the mobilization of natural killer cells (NK cells) and myokines. Yet, the effects of HIIT on tumor development and microenvironment are unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male C57/BL6 mice were administered either MC38 of syngeneic colon cancer cells or vehicle in a single subcutaneous injection. Before injection, the training group completed four weeks of the HIIT program (progressive swimming training, 3/week, 10-12 min, 4-6% of body weight for overload). Following injection, trained mice continued to exercise for two additional weeks. RESULTS: Pre and post-HIIT training was effective in preventing tumor onset (p=0.0065), maintaining body weight gain, and counteracting splenomegaly by 40% compared to the tumor group. However, HIIT had no impact on suppressing tumor growth, modifying final tumor volume, or significantly changing tumor proliferation (Ki-67), connective tissue content, or DNA double-strand damage detected by phospho-histone gamma-H2AX (γ-H2AX). CONCLUSION: Pre and post-HIIT program is feasible for mice carrying a subcutaneous syngeneic tumor and effective in delaying tumor burden; however, HIIT did not alter colon tumor endpoints.

BACKGROUND Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare but serious reaction to anti-resorptive drugs (ARDs) in patients treated for osteoporosis and conditions related to cancer. Treatment for MRONJ consists of the use of non-operative therapies according to the evolution of the disease, which consist of the use of antimicrobial mouthwashes, systemic antibiotics, and operative therapies, such as debridement of necrotic bone, marginal or segmental resection, and bone reconstruction of the jaws in more advanced stages of the disease. CASE REPORT This is a case series of 11 female patients treated for MRONJ, with a mean age of 76.5 years. Patients with malignant diseases of the jaws or those undergoing head and neck radiotherapy were excluded. Nine patients were medicated for osteoporosis with oral bisphosphonates and denosumab, and 2 patients used zoledronate to treat metastatic breast cancer. MRONJ prevailed in the mandible, most patients were classified as stage 2, and the most frequent triggers were tooth extraction and prosthetic trauma. All patients initially underwent non-operative therapies and were operated according to MRONJ stage, but none required segmental resection. Adjuvant treatments were used in 5 patients, and mean treatment and follow-up periods were 5 and 18.3 months, respectively. There was complete resolution of disease in all patients, with only 1 relapse. CONCLUSIONS This case series suggests that it is possible to treat MRONJ with conservative therapies in the early stages of the disease and minimally invasive surgeries in more advanced stages of the disease, thus avoiding segmental jaw resections.

Introducción. La adolescencia es un periodo de desarrollo biopsicosocial que va desde los 10 a 19 años, el embarazo entre estas edades supone una preocupación para la salud pública por todo lo que conlleva. Objetivo. Conocer la frecuencia y características clínico-epidemiológicas de gestantes adolescentes atendidas en el servicio de maternidad del Hospital Regional de Pedro Juan Caballero entre diciembre del 2021 a noviembre del 2022 Materiales y Método. Estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo de corte transversal, muestreo por conveniencia de adolescentes atendidas en el servicio de ginecología del Hospital Regional de Pedro Juan Caballero en el periodo diciembre 2021 a noviembre del 2022.Resultados. De 1615 puérperas, el 20% (n=317) fueron adolescentes, 26% de ellas tenían 19 años, 78,5% en unión libre, 38,2% tenía por lo menos 5 controles prenatales. En los antecedentes gineco obstétricos el 81% eran nulíparas. El peso de los 317 niños fue 2501 a 4000 gramos en un 83%y en puntaje APGAR 98,7% presentó un puntaje de 7-10; 82% nació entre 37-42 semanas y 50,3% fueron varones. La vía de parto más común fue la vaginal con 73% y de presentación cefálica en un 97%. Conclusión. La frecuencia de gestantes adolescentes representa una quinta parte del total de gestantes atendidas, más de dos tercios nacieron con peso adecuado, en su mayoría un APGAR de 7-10 a los 5 minutos y la vía por la cual nacieron en su mayoría fue la vaginal, en presentación cefálica. Introduction. Adolescence is a period of biopsychosocial development that goes from 10 to 19 years old. Pregnancy between these ages is a concern for public health due to everything it entails. Objetive.to know the frequency of teenage pregnant women treated in the maternity service of the Pedro Juan Caballero Regional Hospital in the period from December 2021 to November 2022.Material and Method. Descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional, convenience sampling of adolescents treated in the Gynecology service of the Pedro Juan Caballero Regional Hospital in the period December 2021 to November 2022. Results.20% of the total pregnant women attended were adolescents, 26% of the adolescents were 19 years old, marital status, common-law union 74.5%. 38.2% had at least 5 prenatal checkups. In the Obstetric Gynecological History, 81% were nulliparous. The weight of the 317 children was 2501 to 4000 grams in 83% and in the APGAR score 98.7% had a score of 7-10;82% were born between 37-42 weeks and 50.3% were boys. The most common route of delivery was vaginal with 73% and cephalic presentation in 97%. Conclusion.The frequency of pregnant adolescents represents a fifth of the total pregnant women attended, morethan two thirds were born with adequate weight, mostly an APGAR of 7-10 at 5 minutes and the route by which they were mostly born was vaginal, in cephalic presentation. BACKGROUND: Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and can lead to neurological complications in severe cases. OBJECTIVE: This study examined neuroimaging patterns in chikungunya cases during two outbreaks in Brazil to identify specific patterns for diagnosis and treatment of neuro-chikungunya. METHODS: Eight patients with confirmed chikungunya and neurological involvement were included. Clinical examinations and MRI scans were performed, and findings were analyzed by neuroradiologists. Data on age, sex, neurological symptoms, diagnostic tests, MRI findings, and clinical outcomes were recorded. RESULTS: Patients showed different neuroimaging patterns. Six patients exhibited a "clock dial pattern" with hyperintense dotted lesions in the spinal cord periphery. One patient had thickening and enhancement of anterior nerve roots. Brain MRI revealed multiple hyperintense lesions in the white matter, particularly in the medulla oblongata, in six patients. One patient had a normal brain MRI. CONCLUSION: The "clock dial pattern" observed in spinal cord MRI may be indicative of chikungunya-related nervous system lesions. Isolated involvement of spinal cord white matter in chikungunya can help differentiate it from other viral infections. Additionally, distinct brainstem involvement in chikungunya-associated encephalitis, particularly in the rostral region, sets it apart from other arboviral infections. Recognizing these neuroimaging patterns can contribute to early diagnosis and appropriate management of neuro-chikungunya.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo examinou padrões de neuroimagem em casos de chikungunya durante dois surtos no Brasil para identificar padrões específicos para o diagnóstico e tratamento de neurochikungunya. MéTODOS: Oito pacientes com chikungunya confirmada e envolvimento neurológico foram incluídos. Exames clínicos e ressonâncias magnéticas (RM) foram realizados, e os achados foram analisados por neurorradiologistas. Dados sobre idade, sexo, sintomas neurológicos, testes diagnósticos, achados de RM e desfechos clínicos foram registrados. RESULTADOS: Os pacientes apresentaram diferentes padrões de neuroimagem. Seis pacientes apresentaram um "padrão de mostrador de relógio" com lesões pontilhadas hiperintensas na periferia da medula espinhal. Um paciente apresentou espessamento e realce das raízes nervosas anteriores. A RM do cérebro revelou múltiplas lesões hiperintensas na substância branca, especialmente no bulbo em seis pacientes. Um paciente apresentou uma RM cerebral normal. CONCLUSãO: O "padrão de mostrador de relógio" observado na RM da medula espinhal pode ser indicativo de lesões do sistema nervoso relacionadas à chikungunya. O envolvimento isolado da substância branca da medula espinhal na chikungunya pode ajudar a diferenciá-la de outras infecções virais. Além disso, o envolvimento distinto do tronco cerebral na encefalite associada à chikungunya, especialmente na região rostral, a distingue de outras infecções por arbovírus. O reconhecimento desses padrões de neuroimagem pode contribuir para o diagnóstico precoce e manejo adequado da neurochikungunya.

Objectives: The current European crisis in human resources in health has opened the debate about working conditions and fair wages. This is the case with Resident doctors, which have faced challenges throughout Europe. In Portugal, they account for about a third of the doctors in the Portuguese National Health Service. No studies to date objectively demonstrate the working conditions and responsibilities undertaken. This study aims to quantify the residents' workload and working conditions. Methods: Observational, retrospective cross-sectional study which involved a survey on the clinical and training activity of Portuguese residents, actively working in September 2020. The survey was distributed through e-mail to residents' representatives and directly to those affiliated with the Independent Union of Portuguese Doctors. The descriptive analysis assessed current workload, and logistic regression models analyzed associations with geographical location and residency seniority. Results: There were a total of 2,012 participants (19.6% of invited residents). Of the residents giving consultations, 85.3% do so with full autonomy. In the emergency department, 32.1% of the residents work 24 h shifts and 25.1% work shifts without a specialist doctor present. Regarding medical training, 40.8% invest over EUR 1,500 annually. Autonomy in consultations was associated with being a Family Medicine resident (OR 4.219, p < 0.001), being a senior resident (OR 5.143, p < 0.001), and working in the Center (OR 1.685, p = 0.009) and South regions (OR 2.172, p < 0.001). Seniority was also associated with investing over EUR 1,500 in training annually (OR 1.235, p = 0.021). Conclusion: Residents work far more than the contracted 40 h week, often on an unpaid basis. They present a high degree of autonomy in their practice, make a very significant personal and financial investment in medical training, with almost no time dedicated to studying during working hours. There is a need to provide better working conditions for health professionals, including residents, for the sake of the sustainability of health systems across Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Natural hair curvature and colour are genetically determined human traits, that we intentionally change by applying thermal and chemical treatments to the fibre. Presently, those cosmetic methodologies act externally and their recurrent use is quite detrimental to hair fibre quality and even to our health. OBJECTIVES: This work represents a disruptive concept to modify natural hair colour and curvature. We aim to model the fibre phenotype as it is actively produced in the follicle through the topical delivery of specific bioactive molecules to the scalp. METHODS: Transcriptome differences between curly and straight hairs were identified by microarray. In scalp samples, the most variable transcripts were mapped by in situ hybridization. Then, by using appropriate cellular models, we screened a chemical library of 1200 generic drugs, searching for molecules that could lead to changes in either fibre colour or curvature. A pilot-scale, single-centre, investigator-initiated, prospective, blind, bilateral (split-scalp) placebo-controlled clinical study with the intervention of cosmetics was conducted to obtain a proof of concept (RNEC n.92938). RESULTS: We found 85 genes transcribed significantly different between curly and straight hair, not previously associated with this human trait. Next, we mapped some of the most variable genes to the inner root sheath of follicles, reinforcing the role of this cell layer in fibre shape moulding. From the drug library screening, we selected 3 and 4 hits as modulators of melanin synthesis and gene transcription, respectively, to be further tested in 33 volunteers. The intentional specific hair change occurred: 8 of 14 volunteers exhibited colour changes, and 16 of 19 volunteers presented curvature modifications, by the end of the study. CONCLUSION: The promising results obtained are the first step towards future cosmetics, complementary or alternative to current methodologies, taking hair styling to a new level: changing hair from the inside out.

BACKGROUND Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and reduce osteoporotic fracture incidence. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) and atypical femoral fractures (AFF) are both rare but serious adverse effects of anti-resorptive drugs (ARD) such as bisphosphonates. The most advanced form of MRONJ is termed stage 3 and can lead to severe local sequelae like pathologic mandibular fractures (PMF). This study reports a case of MRONJ-related PMF and AFF with osteomyelitis secondary to bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis. CASE REPORT A 63-year-old white woman was diagnosed with PMF related to MRONJ stage 3 during treatment of an AFF with osteomyelitis. She had been treated for postmenopausal osteoporosis with 70 mg of alendronate weekly for 2 years. The PMF was treated by stable internal fixation combined with debridement and sequestrectomy, but further debridement was required and 2 mandibular implants were then removed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful and the mandibular infection was controlled after the second surgery. Three weeks later, she was discharged from the hospital, instructed to discontinue the use of alendronate, and referred for 30 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. At the 3-year follow-up, the PMF was completely healed without signs of mandibular infection or bone exposure. CONCLUSIONS This report raises awareness of both MRONJ and AFF as possible adverse effects of short-term bisphosphonate therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis, and highlights the importance of dental and orthopedic follow-ups. It is crucial to emphasize the need for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent MRONJ progression to PMF.

BACKGROUND: Acute rejection remains one of the main complications in the first months after transplantation and may influence long-term outcomes. Tacrolimus has proven its usefulness in solid organ transplants and its monitoring through the application of pharmacokinetic concepts to optimize individual drug therapy. OBJECTIVE: This research proposes to evaluate the tacrolimus pharmacokinetic parameters in patients suspected of acute kidney graft rejection under methylprednisolone pulse therapy. METHODS: Eleven adult tacrolimus-treated renal recipients were selected from a prospective, single-arm, single-center cohort study, with suspicion of acute rejection although in use of methylprednisolone pulses therapy. They were followed up for three months posttransplantation, being tacrolimus trough serum concentrations determined using a chemiluminescent magnetic immunoassay, and pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated by using a nonlinear mixed-effects model implemented by Monolix 2020R1. A tacrolimus trough serum concentration range of 8 to 12 ng.mL-1 was considered therapeutic. RESULTS: Six patients showed acute cellular rejection, and two of them in addition had an antibody- mediated rejection. Tacrolimus trough serum concentration was below the reference range in eight patients. Most patients showed a high tacrolimus concentration intrapatient and pharmacokinetic parameters variability. CONCLUSION: The obtained pharmacokinetics parameters helped in understanding the kidney recipient patients' tacrolimus behavior, assisting in the improvement of individual drug therapy and reducing the risk of acute rejection episodes.

PURPOSE: To compare the use of toluidine blue 1% eye drops with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the determination of tumour margins in patients with ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). METHODS: The study was conducted from July 2020 to June 2021 at the Ocular Oncology department at the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil. Slit-lamp photographs after toluidine blue staining and OCT of the anterior segment were taken on the same day from patients with OSSN. Photographs and OCT images were analyzed quantitatively using the software ImageJ and IMAGEnet®, respectively. The agreement between techniques was evaluated qualitatively through the Bland-Altman graph and quantitatively through intraclass correlation (ICC). RESULTS: A total of 21 participants (71.43% males) with a clinical diagnosis of OSSN were included in the study. The average + SD diameter along the chosen axes was 4.43 ± 2.08 mm with OCT of 4.37 ± 2.03 mm with toluidine blue, a difference not statistically significant (p = 0.2891). The Bland-Altman analysis indicated a good qualitative agreement between the methods, with all cases inserted within the limits of agreement from -0.3217 to 0.4268. The ICC quantitative analysis showed an almost perfect agreement of 99.57% (95%CI: 98.96-99.83%; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that OCT and toluidine eye drops are equivalent in determining margins for tumour measurements, which is particularly relevant in low-income settings where anterior segment OCT is not available. The use of toluidine blue 1% could be an useful alternative to quantify the size of the tumour, help to monitor tumour growth, and outline margins for surgical planning.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness of the infliximab biosimilar CT-P13 with originator infliximab over 24 months of follow-up in biological-naïve patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). METHODS: Biological-naïve patients from the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register (Reuma.pt), with a clinical diagnosis of RA or axSpA, who were starting either the infliximab biosimilar CT-P13 or the originator infliximab after 2014 (date of market entry of CT-P13 in Portugal), were included. Patients on biosimilar and originator were compared regarding different response outcomes at 3 and 6 months, adjusting for age, sex and baseline C-reactive protein (CRP). The main outcome was the change in DAS28-erytrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) for RA and the ASDAS-CRP for axSpA. Additionally, the effect of infliximab biosimilar vs originator on different response outcomes over 24 months of follow-up was tested with longitudinal generalized estimating equations (GEE) models. RESULTS: In total, 140 patients were included, 66 (47%) of which with RA. The distribution of patients starting the infliximab biosimilar and the originator was the same between the two diseases (approximately 60% and 40%, respectively). From the 66 patients with RA, 82% were females, mean age was 56 years (SD 11) and mean DAS28-ESR 4.9 (1.3) at baseline. As for the patients with axSpA, 53% were males, mean age was 46 years (13) and mean ASDAS-CRP 3.7 (0.9) at baseline. There were no differences in efficacy between RA patients treated with the infliximab biosimilar and the originator, either at 3 months (∆DAS28-ESR: -0.6 (95% CI -1.3; 0.1) vs -1.2 (-2.0; -0.4)), or at 6 months (∆DAS28-ESR: -0.7 (-1.5; 0.0) vs -1.5 (-2.4; -0.7)). This was also true for patients with axSpA (∆ASDAS-CRP at 3 months: -1.6 (-2.0; -1.1) vs -1.4 (-1.8; -0.9) and at 6 months: -1.5 (-2.0; -1.1) vs -1.1 (-1.5; -0.7)). Results were similar with the longitudinal models over 24 months. CONCLUSION: There are no differences in effectiveness between the infliximab biosimilar CT-P13 and the infliximab originator in the treatment of biological-naïve patients with active RA and axSpA in clinical practice.

The greater rhea, Rhea americana, is a wild ratite of high scientific importance and significant and zootechnical value, especially considering the current development state of Brazilian poultry production, where research aimed at increasing the productivity of these animals has become extremely relevant. Studies concerning fetal attachments and embryonic development are paramount, as they can provide essential information concerning reproductive and nutritional animal management. However, a lack of information on greater rhea fetal morphology is noted. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to establish a standard model for fetal attachments in this species. Greater rhea eggs were incubated from 0 to 36 days, and macroscopic and microscopic embryonic attachment characterizations were performed. Histologically, all embryonic annexes exhibit germ layers, namely the ectoderm (outer layer), mesoderm (middle layer) and endoderm (inner layer). The findings indicate that greater rhea development patterns are similar to other birds.

Microbial resistance to drugs is a public health problem; therefore, there is a search for alternatives to replace conventional products with natural agents. One of the potential antimicrobial agents is wood vinegar derived from the carbonization of lignocellulosic raw materials. The objectives of the present work were to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal action of two kinds of wood vinegar (WV), one of Eucalyptus urograndis wood and another of Bambusa vulgaris biomass, and determine their chemical profile. The antimicrobial effect was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal and fungicidal concentrations were determined. Micrographs of the microorganisms before and after exposure to both kinds of wood vinegar were obtained by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical profile of the eucalyptus and bamboo vinegar was carried out by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Both types of WV presented significant antimicrobial activity, with the bamboo one having a higher efficiency. Both studied pyroligneous extracts seem promising for developing natural antimicrobials due to their efficiency against pathogens. GC/MS analyses demonstrated that the chemical profiles of both kinds of WV were similar but with some significant differences. The major component of the eucalyptus vinegar was furfural (17.2%), while the bamboo WV was phenol (15.3%). Several compounds in both WVs have proven antimicrobial activity, such as acetic acid, furfural, phenol, cresols, guaiacol, and xylenols. Together, they are the major in the chemical composition of the organic fraction of both WVs. Bamboo vinegar had a more expressive content of organic acids. Micrographs of microorganisms taken after exposure to both kinds of wood vinegar displayed several cell modifications. The potential of both types of wood vinegar as a basis for natural antimicrobial products seems feasible due to their proven effect on inhibiting the microorganisms' growth assessed in this experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNFα) agents can potentially induce the anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) development over time. Evidence of the real impact of these autoantibodies on clinical response to treatment in rheumatic patients is still scarce. OBJECTIVES: To explore the impact of ANA seroconversion induced by anti-TNFα therapy on clinical outcomes in biologic-naïve patients with Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), axial spondylarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS: An observational retrospective cohort study enrolling biologic-naïve patients with RA, axSpA and PsA who started their first anti-TNFα agent was conducted for 24 months(M). Sociodemographic data, laboratory findings, disease activity and physical function scores were collected at baseline, 12M and 24M. To examine the differences between the groups with and without ANA seroconversion, independent samples t-tests, Mann-Whitney U-tests and chi-square tests were performed. Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the effects of ANA seroconversion on the clinical response to treatment. RESULTS: A total of 432 patients with RA (N=185), axSpA (N=171) and PsA (N=66) were included. ANA seroconversion rate at 24M was 34.6%, 64.3% and 63.6% for RA, axSpA and PsA, respectively. Regarding sociodemographic and clinical data in RA and PsA patients, no statistically significant differences between groups with and without ANA seroconversion were found. In axSpA patients, ANA seroconversion was more frequent in patients with higher body mass index (p=0.017) and significantly less frequent in patients treated with etanercept (p=0.01). Regarding disease activity, DAS28 for RA patients and ASDAS-CRP for axSpA patients were significantly higher in ANA seroconversion group at 12M (p=0.017 and p=0.009, respectively). For PsA patients, CDAI was significantly higher in ANA seroconversion group at 24M (p=0.043). Overall switching rate of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARD) was significantly higher in the ANA seroconversion group over time (p=0.025). For RA patients, ANA seroconversion predicted DAS28 (ß=-0.21, 95%CI[-1.86;-0.18], p=0.017) at 12M. CONCLUSIONS: ANA seroconversion induced by anti-TNFα agents could interfere in clinical response of patients with rheumatic diseases. The presence of these autoantibodies can be considered as a potential predictor of poor treatment response and higher need for bDMARD switching over time.

RESUMEN

Biomechanics is a branch of biophysics that deals with mechanics applied to biology. Corneal biomechanics have an important role in managing patients with glaucoma. While evidence suggests that patients with thin and stiffer corneas have a higher risk of developing glaucoma, it also influences the accurate measurement of intraocular pressure. We reviewed the pertinent literature to help increase our understanding of the biomechanics of the cornea and other ocular structures and how they can help optimize clinical and surgical treatments, taking into consideration individual variabilities, improve the diagnosis of suspected patients, and help monitor the response to treatment.
